Family Photos
After high school, I moved away from home to attend college to study to become a photographic artist. Since my move, there has been a growing distance between what was originally familiar; the comfort of staying close to my family and the new life I am leading. In an attempt to continue to be a part of my family's daily life, I asked them to document each other photographically. Since January 2009 I have been sending my family a disposable camera with instructions for them to photograph themselves. It has never been a normal process for my family to document their lives this way, not even during special family events or gatherings. Randomly, I will remind them to take pictures of themselves and each other during our phone conversations. Considering the limitations of a disposable camera, I am fascinated by how intriguing a photograph becomes when the subject and environment are intimately familiar.
These are photographs of my family, taken by my family. They are the people that I know best, and they will be apart of my life forever. Through our relationship I am able to understand the nuances their lives.
